By Car:
Driving from Chicago, take I-94 East to exit 26B, merge onto IN-49 North, and follow the signs. Expect driving time to be just over an hour from central Chicago. Carpooling will save on fossil fuels AND park entrance fees (charged on a per car basis). |
By Train:
There is also a South Shore train station near the park. South Shore has launched a pilot program to allow bikes on select weekend trains on a first-come, first-served basis. It is approximately five miles from the train station to the park. A one-way fare from “Millennium Station” (Randolph and Michigan) to “Dune Park” = $8.25. |
The Shelter:
This year, we have reserved Southwest Shelter - a small basic covered shelter with picnic tables and a charcoal grill. Located within a huge picnic area, this shelter is near the centrally located modern bathrooms, a drinking fountain (with water spigot), and a large playground. Also nearby are two small gravel parking lots and a dumpster. |

Indiana Dunes State Park consists of 2,182 acres of primitive, beautiful, historic and unique Hoosier landscape. It…includes more than three miles of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan’s southern shore. In the early 1900s scientists, recreationists and nature enthusiasts, recognizing the value and potential of the Indiana dunes area, fought to have the region preserved. As a result, in 1925, the state park was established.
